Vincent
Smith, noted painter, succumbs at 74 - Census
- Obituary |
Vincent Smith, 74, an artist
whose work portrayed Black life in diverse styles,
recently died of lymphoma complicated by pneumonia
in Manhattan. A Brooklyn native, the figurative painter
had more than 25 one-man shows and participated in
more than 30 group exhibitions since the early 1970s.
Smith was among about a dozen prominent members of
the Black Arts movement of the 1960s and '70s.
A former postal worker, Smith began
to paint full-time in 1953. His education included
the Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Skowhegan
School of Painting in Maine. The Metropolitan Museum
of Art bought the first of three of his paintings
in 1999. His last show was at the Alexandre Gallery
in Manhattan. His work also included illustrations
for a line of greeting cards and books on jazz and
blues for his friend, poet Amiri Baraka.
Survivors include his wife,
Cynthia Smith.
